Van Smart training is a Transport For London (TFL) backed driver training scheme, it was introduced with the aim of reducing road risks involving vans, improve driver safety and create long term behavioural change in professional van drivers. The course is for anyone who drives a van, either as a professional driver or driving a van professionally for any part of the working day. A Van Smart training course consists of two 3.5 hour training modules, which are both delivered on the same day (Unless you have special requirements). As part of this course each delegate will receive a driver handbook, a toolkit for managers, a competency framework, toolbox talks and a poster set which all help to reinforce the safety-based message.
Theory content includes:
- How to effectively plan & prepare for a journey & why this is important
- How to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy
- Safe loading procedures & how to make your load safe
- Basic safety rules for van drivers & defensive driving techniques
Practical content includes:
- How to share the road safely with others
- Driver attitude & the perception towards vulnerable road users
- On road experience to understand why collisions occur & how to reduce the likelihood
- Introduction to active travel, driver fitness & health
